What changes would you make to the art institution environment?
Mya: I would want it to be a space where *everybody* feels like they can ask for help.
Jeah: In any and all educational environment, broadening conversations of other culture is incredibly important. Within the art institution environment, there are so many practices of art in so many different countries. Art is so globally appreciated and practiced in every type of medium and material and it is a shame for it to not be recognized in every art institution. Having only one chapter of Asian art in an art history textbook is devastating while also having only american artist in a referenced slideshow is disappointing. There is so much history and love of art throughout every culture that it’s unfortunate for it to not be recognized and respected within the art institution.
Liana: I would create a safer and more accepting space for POC students. I would make sure they always feel represented in large groups, usually dominated by white peers. I would make sure they got the same, equal opportunities like everyone else.
Maria: Funding. It would be amazing if we could provide materials for students to make it more accessible for everyone. This is a career that not a lot of people choose because its “risky” and it doesn’t help that its an expensive one. But with funding, students wouldn’t have to worry about running out of material halfway through a semester.
